The outside eye that catches what a team is too close to see.
Mission
We design, build, and audit digital products — giving teams the objective, evidence-based perspective they can’t generate from the inside. Some clients later ask us to stay on as fractional design leadership.
Vision
To be the design partner tech companies rely on at every stage of growth — the constant outside signal that keeps product decisions grounded in real users, not internal assumption.
Purpose
Product teams build blind spots into their own work — designing around what’s familiar internally, not what’s true for the people using it. Signal UX exists to close that gap: to be the outside eye that catches what a team is too close to see.
What we hold ourselves to
Excellence
Always doing our best in every client interaction — tailoring the experience to what the client actually needs, not defaulting to a template.
Empathy
Understanding the needs, pain points, and context of the people actually using the product — not just the people paying for it.
Value
Every interaction should add value, never just add activity — design with intention, never out of status quo.
A small team, on purpose
Signal UX is intentionally small — for focus and impact, not because it’s early days. A small, senior team is the same thesis we sell: proximity to the work beats scale for it.

Jean-Marie Steyn
Co-founder & CEO
Focused on turning user research and product decisions into clear positioning, messaging, and campaigns. That work is what the external-facing side of Signal UX runs on — the specifics of past engagements stay confidential, but the discipline of cutting noise and making value obvious carries over directly into how the company communicates.
Why we started this
We founded Signal UX because good UX is more than clean design and fewer clicks — it starts with understanding the people using the product. Most companies treat that as the first thing to cut: research gets called “wasted time,” user interviews get called too risky to fund. But that’s the actual growth lever they’re skipping. Companies consistently overinvest in commercial polish and social presence, and underinvest in the harder, more nuanced work of understanding user context.
